JK Harris offers tips on year-end charitable contributions

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NORTH CHARLESTON. S.C., December, 17. 2009 -

GOOSE CREEK, S.C. – While the end of the year is fast approaching, it’s not too late to make charitable contributions according to Cathy Boags, Enrolled Agent with JK Harris and Company, the nation’s largest tax representation firm.

In the spirit of holiday giving, many taxpayers will be making charitable contributions. Making contributions before December 31 will allow them to claim a deduction on their 2009 return, if they are able to itemize their deductions.

“There is still time to make charitable contributions before the end of the year, but there are a few things to remember,” said Boags. “One of the most important is to make sure you are giving to a qualified charity.”

The IRS only recognizes certain charities. If you are not sure if the IRS recognizes the charity you are considering, visit the IRS website, www.irs.gov to find out.

“Another factor you need to consider is what it is you are donating,” Boags said. “The IRS treats cash and property donations differently and there are some limitations to consider, but typically the limitations affect those taxpayers making rather large donations of either cash or property.”

If you are donating cash, you will need to provide documentation of your payment. In addition, for contributions of $250 or more, make sure to get a receipt with the name of the charity, date and amount of the contribution. If the amount was donated via payroll deduction, check your pay stub or W-2. It should show the amount withheld for charity.

If you are donating used clothing or household goods, they should be in good used condition or better, and are deductible at the fair market value of the item. Obtain a receipt from the charity reflecting the name of the charity, date of the donation and a description of the donation.

Donations of motor vehicles, boats or airplanes are acceptable, but the deduction is typically limited to the amount of the gross proceeds of the sale if the charity sells it. If the charity plans to use the donation in the course of its charitable operations, the item may be deducted at the recognized blue book value.

IRS Form 8283 should be attached to your individual tax return for any contributions that are in excess of $500. For more information on charitable donations, see Publication 526 on the IRS’ website.
