GOOSE CREEK, S.C.– The season for filing taxes is here once again. JK Harris and Company, LLC, and the IRS have a few filing tips to make filing a little less painful.

One of the best tips to remember year-round is to keep all necessary documents for filing your taxes organized and in one place. W-2s, 1099s, mortgage interest statements, K-1s, charitable donation receipts and broker statements are some of the documents you will need to file your return.

“By this time of the year, you should have already received most, if not all of your statements needed to file your returns. Keep them in one safe place until you are ready to file your return,” said Teresa Thomas, an Enrolled Agent with JK Harris, the nation’s largest tax representation firm.

Here are some other helpful tips for getting started this tax season:

• Make sure you have all the correct forms. All forms are available on www.irs.gov.
• Take your time when filling out your forms. Rushing can make mistakes, which could trigger an audit.
• Double-check your math and your Social Security numbers. These are two of the most common errors found on returns. Checking and rechecking your math can reduce the chances of errors and may speed up your refund.
• Get a fast refund. Filing early and using e-file will help you receive your refund quicker. Choosing direct deposit to receive your refund also speeds up the return of your tax refund.
• E-file is fast and it may also help you in catching math errors. Another plus - you will receive confirmation your return has been received. If you qualify, the IRS offers Free-file, a program, which allows qualified individuals to file their return electronically – it’s quick, easy and free.

“The IRS website has a lot of information about the new tax credits, including some credits most people are not familiar with,” added Thomas. “Make sure to read up on these so you don’t miss out on this extra money.”
