It is said that the La Salle Expedition party landed on a small rock formation, La Petite Roche (the Little Rock) on the south bank of the Arkansas River in 1682. So, Little Rock was actually named for a small rock.
In 1821, Little Rock became the capital of the Arkansas Territory and was incorporated as a city in 1831. Just five years later, Arkansas became the 25th state, and Little Rock became it’s capital.
