Mobile, AL - History

Alabama was home to many American Indian tribes before Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda arrived in Mobile Bay in 1519. Although the British and Spanish were active in the Mobile area, French settlers were the first to settle Fort Louis (their name for Mobile) in 1711. When the French and Indian war ended, the British took control over much of the land, although the Spanish retained control in some parts. Britain later ceded its land to the United States in 1783 after the Revolutionary War ended.

When the Native Americans were driven from Alabama following the War of 1812, farmland was available and cotton became the main crop. Because Alabama’s economy was so tied to one crop, the area was hard hit by many financial crises. The area rebounded many times, particularly during World War II.

The city has continued to go through radical changes from desegregation in the early 1960s through the late 1980s when the “String of Pearls” Initiative was implemented to make Mobile over into a competitive, urban city.
