Pasadena, CA - History
Pasadena was originally incorporated at the Indiana Colony in 1874. However, the Postmaster General did not think that was a fitting name, so the town fathers put three names up for a vote. The first was Indianola and the second Granada. Dr. Thomas Elliott had four different names in mind, all of which ended in “of the valley.” When translated into the Ojibwa (Chippewa) language, “of the valley” is pasadena. When put to a vote, Pasadena beat Indianola and Granada and was incorporated in 1886.
With the real estate boom, Pasadena earned fame as a Winter resort for wealthy Easterners from the 1880s until the Great Depression.
