Phoenix, Arizona History

In 1867, Jack Swilling stopped near the White Tank Mountains to rest his horse, and that began modern history for Phoenix The name changed several times before it was named Phoenix since it arose from the ruins of a former civilization.  Jack Swilling saw great potential in the Salt River Valley, potential for farming if water could be brought to the rich soil.  He organized the Swilling Irrigation Canal Company and moved to the Salt River Valley.  The company began digging a canal to divert some of the water from the Salt River to the land.  By 1868, a small colony had formed and was called Swilling’s Mill. 

 

Today, Phoenix has a population of 1.15 million and is the seventh largest city in the U.S.  Four times since 1950 Phoenix has been selected as an “All American City”.

 

Other significant events for Phoenix include the building of the Theodore Roosevelt Dam, which supplied water and electric power to Phoenix.  President Taft approved Arizona’s statehood on February 14, 1912.  In 1920, a total of 1,020 buildings went up in Phoenix, including the Heard Building, Arizona’s first skyscraper.  The city continued to grow as the United States was drawn into World War II.  Thousands of men came into Phoenix since it was the location for three airfields and a giant ground-training center.
